Layers of Illusion

The figure is not painted as if she were there: she is painted as the visible product of successive layers, each adding a degree of visual fiction. Ground, silhouette, modeling, then translucent veils and pale fragments floating in front of the pictorial plane: Legac shows here the representation rather than the person, and in that gap perhaps lies a deeper truth than that of traditional portraiture.
